Budget airlines are frequently used by business and personal travelers everywhere. This type of airline has become very popular in society and does not show any signs of slowing down in the future. Here are the basics of budget airlines and how they could potentially save you money.

Reserved Seating

Many of the budget airlines do not offer reserved seating as part of their package. Instead, you will simply purchase a ticket and the seats are first come, first served. Therefore, if you need to sit with someone else, you will need to get there early in the boarding process. Many of these flights do not have a first-class section either.

Baggage

Depending on the carrier, you may have to pay extra fees for baggage. Southwest Airlines does not charge any type of fee for bringing up to two bags onto the plane. However, many other budget airlines will attempt to make up for their cheap airfare prices by charging more for checking a bag. Before you purchase a ticket with one of these discount airlines, make sure that you understand how their baggage policy works. This will allow you to avoid any potential fees that you are not expecting.

Short Flights

Another common theme with many of these airlines is that they have short flights to specific destinations. Many of these airliners will only fly into and out of certain airports in the country. This means that depending on where you live, you may not be able to take advantage of many of these discount airlines. For example, with Allegiant Air, they only have six destinations that you can travel to with places like Orlando, Phoenix, and Las Vegas among them.

Meal

With most of these budget airlines, you should not expect to be given a meal during the flight. While most of these flights are short anyway, the airlines eliminate this service so they can save you more money.

How Much Savings

Many of these budget airlines are quite a bit cheaper than a traditional airline. In some cases, you can save as much as 50 percent when compared to other airlines. For example, Allegiant will frequently have specials that allow passengers to travel to Las Vegas or Orlando for $29 or $39 one-way. By the time taxes and fees are added onto this total, you will usually pay about $50 to $60 each direction. This means that if you are willing to sacrifice a few features, you could potentially save quite a bit of money with a budget airline.
