Commodity Investing: A Beginner's Guide to Futures Contracts
Many investors would like to get involved in hot commodities in some capacity. However, investing in commodities is not as widely understood as investing in stocks. Here are the basics of how you can take advantage of the commodity market.
Futures Contracts
The most direct way to take advantage of a hot commodity is to get involved in futures contracts. A futures contract allows you to speculate on the price of a commodity. For example, if you believe that the price of a commodity is going to increase, you can purchase a futures contract based on today's prices. Then, as time passes and the price of the commodity increases, you can sell your right to the commodity at the new price and make a profit. In order to get involved in futures contracts, you will have to open a special trading account with a futures broker instead of using a traditional brokerage account.
Commodity Stocks
Another way you could take advantage of the commodities market is to purchase commodity stocks. These are stocks that are linked to corporations that deal with commodities. With this method, you can take advantage of price swings and still use your same brokerage account.
