Water Investing: Opportunities & Strategies for a Sustainable Future
Investing in water is a technique that many investors have turned to in recent years. In the past, investing in water might have seemed like something that was unwise. Today, there is a huge amount of potential for those that invest in water. Here are a few things to consider about investing in water and how you can go about doing so.
Investing in Water
Water is the most precious resource that we have on the planet. Even though many investors are concerned with putting their money into oil and natural gas, water is actually more valuable than them all. We could potentially come up with a technological innovation that would completely illuminate the need for oil. There is no innovation that we can come up with that is going to replace the need for water. We are always going to need water and clean water is becoming more scarce. Even though the amount of water remains the same, the amount of people on the planet increases. Over the last 50 years, water consumption has tripled. If this pace continues, it is not going to be very long before water is considered to be very scarce. At that point, it is going to be a very valuable commodity to own. If you are an investor in water at that time, you stand to bring in a substantial return on your investment.
Stocks
The most direct way that you can get involved in water investing is to put money into stocks. There are many companies out there that specialize in water and you can invest directly in them. You could choose to invest in local water utilities directly. These companies do not have much growth, but they will provide you with a steady dividend. Another option that you have is to invest in companies that are at the forefront of water purification technology. For example, you could invest in companies that are working on ocean water desalinization.
Funds
There are a number of mutual and hedge funds that focus on water investing as part of their investment strategy. When you invest in a fund, you are going to be pooling your money together with many other investors. This is one of the safest ways for you to invest in water because the portfolio is very diversified. The fund will purchase many different stocks from the various water companies out there. Then, you will be diversified and you will not have to worry about one company going out of business or performing poorly.
ETFs
Another option that you can look at if you want to invest in water is an ETF. ETF stands for exchange traded fund which means that you can trade it on a traditional stock exchange anytime that it is open. These investments are very similar to mutual funds except that they have superior liquidity. If you want to sell your shares, you are free to do so at anytime.
