DIY PVC Garden Fence: Affordable Protection for Your Plants

Wild animals can be a huge problem for gardeners. They destroy crops and dig up the earth that you have carefully tilled. You can keep these pests out by building a simple fence out of PVC pipe and chicken wire. This fence is inexpensive to build, can conform to any shape and is portable, so you can remove it if unnecessary. Everything you need to build the fence is sold at your local hardware store.
Step 1
Determine how tall your fence needs to be in order to keep out local animals. This will dictate the length of your PVC pipes.
Step 2
Clamp 2-inch PVC pipe in a vise and cut pieces of the required length with a hacksaw. You will need four of these pieces per fence section.
Step 3
Sand the ends of the cut pipes with 60-grit sandpaper to prepare them for glue.
Step 4
Brush PVC glue into the ends of four 2-inch PVC elbow joints. Insert the sanded pipes into these joints, forming a square.
Step 5
Wipe away any excess glue that oozes out of the connections with a paper towel and allow the glue to dry for the time recommended on the container.
Step 6
Cut a piece of chicken wire to match the inner dimensions of the square with wire cutters.
Step 7
Secure the chicken wire inside of the square with zip ties, attached every 3 inches.
Step 8
Repeat this process to make enough squares to surround your garden.
Step 9
Connect the squares with zip ties, holding the right side of one square to the left side of the next. These connections will act as hinges, allowing you to bend and shape the fence to surround your garden.
Step 10
Place the fence around your garden. Tie the ends of the fence together with rope instead of zip ties so that you can untie it and access your garden.
