Walmart Grants & Scholarships for Homeschooling & Education

Walmart provides grants and scholarships to local communities and individuals around the country. Walmart typically provides funds to educational programs and colleges. Walmart offers grants for homeschool children, but you must approach the company to learn more about them. The company also offers a range of scholarships for which homeschool high school seniors may be eligible.

Educational Grants

Walmart provides funding to nonprofit organizations that focus on education at different levels. It has provided funds to several organizations in the past, including the Institute for Higher Education Policy to increase the number of first-generation college students.

Local Organizations

Local organizations are eligible for funding from their local Walmart stores. However, it is unlikely that a homeschool organization would receive funding through this program as Walmart does not give local community grants to organizations that offer scholarships or services only to their members. Walmart local community grants can also not be given to individuals or individual families.

Dependent Scholarship

Walmart allows homeschool students to apply for some of their scholarships. For example, the Walmart Dependent Scholarship for 2011 was available to dependents of Walmart employees who had worked at Walmart for at least six months. The scholarship was worth $3,000 in 2011, and students had to have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average and demonstrated financial need to qualify.

Community Scholarship

The Walmart Sam Walton Community Scholarship has similar academic and financial eligibility requirements to the Dependent Scholarship. It was also worth $3,000 in 2011, and it was also available to homeschool students. The Walton Family Foundation offers scholarships to homeschool seniors as well. In 2011, the scholarship was only open to dependents of full-time Walmart associates who had worked at Walmart at least 12-consecutive months. Students applying for this scholarship had to have a combined SAT score of 1030 or an ACT score of 22 to be eligible. Walmart also offers scholarships to its associate employees.

Other Grants

Some libraries have received funding from their states and have used the funding to provide services to homeschoolers at the public library. State homeschool associations may also provide funding for homeschooling activities and expenses. For example the West Virginia Home Educators Association provides up to $500 for expenses related to homeschooling to local homeschooling groups for a variety of purposes. The ED Anywhere alternative education program for high school and middle school students also offers grants of $100 for each student in local homeschool groups that are enrolled in the ED Anywhere program.
