Using Indiana SNAP Benefits Out of State: What You Need to Know
Although you go to an Indiana office to apply for food stamp benefits in Indiana, the federal government provides all of the funding for your use. The name of the food stamp program has been changed to Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program, or SNAP, though most people still refer to it under the old title. You can use your Indiana SNAP debit card, also called the electronic benefits transfer card, in any state, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Puerto Rico is the only territory that doesn't accept the EBT card, as of 2011. Look for the "Quest" logo on or near the storefront window.
How to Use
You should wipe your card at the register and enter your personal identification number in the same way you would use a debit card, according to the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends checking your balance prior to shopping to ensure that you don't overspend.
How Much?
How much money you're allotted for SNAP benefits depends on the number of people in your household, your expenses and your income. One person can receive as much as $200 a month if qualified, according to the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. A family of four can receive as much as $668.
What to Buy?
Edible food is eligible for purchase. However, hot food or food meant to be consumed on the premises isn't eligible for buying, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Vitamins, alcohol, medication, cigarettes and paper products are also not allowed.
