Boat Towing Insurance: Coverage for On-Water & Road Accidents

When you are talking about boat towing insurance, it is important to clarify whether you mean accidents on the water or accidents on the road. The loose term "boat towing insurance" includes both types, but you will need a separate policy for each type of boating accident to be covered.

Road Towing Insurance

Some car insurance policies provide for accidents on the road that involve your boat trailer. It is not covered across the board though, and it is often an added expense. Check your policy before attaching your boat trailer to your car or truck's hitch. If any language is unclear, or if the words "boat towing" or "boat trailer" do not appear anywhere, call your policy provider to double check.

Water Towing Insurance

If you are using your boat to tow anything on the water, including water skiers or water tubes, you should check to see what is covered. Most insurance policies will recommend you have each passenger sign a waiver prior to being towed by your boat. You should be particularly careful when using your boat to tow other recreational vehicles such as jet skis. Damage to the property is more likely in this case, and your boater's insurance may not cover it unless you elect the line.
