Understanding Class B Shares: Investor Implications
When trading stocks, you will sometimes come across Class B shares. As an investor, you need to understand the difference between Class A and Class B shares and how they can affect you in the long run.
Class B Shares
This type of share is one version of common stock in a corporation. Typically, a company will have both Class A and Class B shares. The main difference between these two types of shares is that they come with different voting rights. In many cases, Class B shares will have fewer voting rights than Class A shares.
Investment Impact
While Class B shares are known for having fewer voting rights than Class A shares, this is not always the case. In fact, some companies will play on this misconception in order to take advantage of investors. Sometimes, they will set up the Class B shares to have more voting rights than those with Class A shares.
Therefore, you need to make sure that you check what type of voting rights comes with your share before you purchase it. You know that it will be different from the other class, but you do not know which class of stock has more voting rights unless you check.
