Become a Student Teaching Supervisor: Requirements & Career Path
Student teaching supervisors manage students completing internship requirements to finish their teacher education programs. Universities and colleges typically hire student teaching supervisors as part of their full-time faculty. Student teaching supervisor jobs are highly competitive. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, post-secondary teachers, such as student teaching supervisors, earn a median salary of about $58,800 as of May 2008.
Step 1
Gain several years' worth of teaching and/or administrative experience. Student teaching supervisors need knowledge and expertise in classroom management, curriculum development, instructional delivery, parent involvement and all other aspects of the school environment.
Step 2
Complete at least a master's degree in addition to your bachelor's degree. Some universities or colleges may require a specialist or doctoral degree in education.
Step 3
Volunteer to mentor or sponsor new teachers to gain supervisory experience prior to applying for student teaching supervisor positions.
Step 4
Compile a professional portfolio in a three-ring binder. The portfolio should include copies of teaching licenses, transcripts, teacher exam scores, resumes, letters of recommendation, teaching philosophy essay, copies of awards or other recognition, student work samples, lesson plan examples and photos showing classroom activities.
Step 5
Search job listings at universities and colleges located near your home or in areas you may be interested in moving to. If you find a listing for a student teaching supervisor, follow application instructions given.
Step 6
Apply for other university or college jobs in education-related fields to get your foot in the door. After a few years, a student teaching supervisor position may become available and may be offered first to existing faculty.
Tip
Do not expect to get a student teaching supervisor job straight out of college. This type of job is reserved for professionals with several years of experience in their field.
