Unemployment Benefits: A Guide to Cashing Your Check or Debit Card
States issue unemployment payments via check, debit card or electronic deposit. Cash the unemployment checks at your personal bank or another location. Some states, like Indiana, have a bank associated with the unemployment office. You may have to pay a fee if you cash the check at a store or check-cashing company. The debit card only works with ATMs specified by the state unemployment office, but it's possible to make purchases with it anywhere regular debit cards are used.
Check
Step 1
Sign the back of the check.
Step 2
Take the check to a bank, check-cashing place or service location.
Step 3
Hand the cashier or teller the check and ID, if necessary.
Debit card
Step 1
Insert the debit card into the ATM.
Step 2
Enter the PIN number.
Step 3
Type in the amount of funds you want to withdraw.
Step 4
Remove the cash and eject the card.
Tip
Another way to pull cash off the debit card is to make a purchase with the debit card. Ask for cash back.
