Direct Deposit: Understanding Your Bank Routing & Account Numbers

When submitting a direct deposit enrollment form you will need to supply several pieces of information in order to have money deposited into your checking account. You will need your name and address, your bank's routing number and your checking account number. Both of these numbers can be found on your checks.

Step 1

Locate the bank routing number on the bottom of the check. The routing number will be in the lower left corner of the check. It will contain nine numbers.

Step 2

Locate your checking account number on the bottom of the check. The checking account number will be to the right of the bank routing number. The number of digits of an account number will vary depending on the bank. The number of the individual check is often included after the account number. Do not include this when recording the account number.

Step 3

Find your name and address on the check. These items should be in the top left corner of the check. It is important to use the exact same spelling for your name and address that is on your check when filling out a direct deposit request form.

Warning

You may be required to submit a sample check with your direct deposit enrollment form. It is very important for security reasons to void the check before you submit it. Simply write "Void" on both sides of the check.
