Manage Your Social Security Direct Deposit: A Simple Guide
If you receive Social Security benefits, you can save yourself a trip to the bank by having your payments directly deposited to your bank account. Using direct deposit means that you won't have to worry about your check being stolen from your mailbox and that your benefits will be deposited at the same time each month even if you are away from home. It's important to make sure that your checking account information remains up to date; if you change banks, you will need to contact Social Security and change your direct deposit information.
Step 1
Call Social Security at (800) 772-1213 to speak with a customer service representative.
Step 2
Follow the voice prompts on the phone and say "Operator" when prompted for a reason for your call.
Step 3
Tell the customer service representative that you are calling to change your direct deposit account information. Verify your identity, and provide her with your new account information.
Tip
Write down the confirmation number and date of your call in case you need to call Social Security again.
