Update Your Social Security Direct Deposit Account: A Step-by-Step Guide

Direct deposit for Social Security benefits is fast, safe and convenient. If you must change your direct deposit routing to a different account or institution, you'll need your Social Security number and personal information. You'll also need a savings account statement or a check. These documents provide the name and address of your financial institution and the routing and account numbers. When you've gathered the necessary information, you can choose among several ways to make the change.
Make the Change Online
If you already have an online My Social Security account, you can use it to change your direct deposit selection. If you don't have an account, visit the "Create an Account" page on the Social Security website to open one. You'll need to supply your Social Security number and email address and choose a username and password. Once your account is activated, log on and click the "My Profile" tab to change your direct deposit information.
Call Social Security
You can change your direct deposit account by calling Social Security and providing the required information. Call 1-800-772-1213, or use 1-800-325-0778 if you're hearing-impaired. Both numbers have operators available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday in your time zone.
Visit Your Local Office
Fill out a new direct deposit form and deliver it to your local Social Security branch. The form is available to download and print on the Social Security website. If you don't know the location of the nearest Social Security office, find it by entering your ZIP code in the office locator tool on the Social Security website.
Let Your Bank Help
Visit your bank, savings and loan or credit union to make the change. Take your personal information and documentation of your account to a branch of the institution where you want to begin direct deposit. For example, take your savings account statement or a check, depending on which type of account you select.
