How to Transfer Funds Between Green Dot and NetSpend
Introduction
Moving money between your Green Dot and Netspend prepaid cards can be done in person or online. Free options include setting up a bank-to-bank transfer with either card directly or through PayPal. You can also transfer funds using Western Union or MoneyGram, but for a fee.
Bank-to-Bank Transfer
Like traditional bank accounts, both Green Dot and Netspend prepaid cards have a routing and account number. The routing number electronically identifies each financial institution. The account number may be your card number or a different number altogether. Typically, Green Dot and Netspend provide these numbers in the introductory packet mailed with the card. You can also obtain them by calling Green Dot at (866) 795-7597 and Netspend at (866) 387-7363.
Log into your Netspend account and enter your Green Dot routing and account number to link your Green Dot card to your Netspend card. Next, schedule a money transfer from your Green Dot account to Netspend. Transfers are free and typically take one to three business days.
Reload @ the Register
Green Dot also has a service called Reload @ The Register. To transfer money usin this service, ithdraw cash from your Green Dot card and take your cash and Netspend card to the register of Ace Cash Express, CVS Pharmacy, Dollar General, K-Mart, Rite Aid, 7-Eleven, Walgreens, Kroger, Safeway or Walmart. The cashier can add the money to your Netspend card for a fee of $4.95 as of publication; the funds are available immediately.
PayPal
If you have a PayPal account, you can use it to send and receive money between your Green Dot and Netspend accounts. First, link both cards to your PayPal account by logging into PayPal and adding the routing and account numbers for each. PayPal will confirm each account with test deposits. Next, schedule a transfer from your Green Dot card to your PayPal account. The transfer is free and usually takes one to three business days. When the deposit posts to your PayPal account, transfer the funds from PayPal to your Netspend card. This transfer is also free and typically takes one to three business days.
MoneyGram and Western Union
You can transfer funds from your Green Dot card using MoneyGram and Western Union. You can send money online and by phone using either a bank account or credit or debit card. To send money using your Green Dot card as a bank account, provide its routing and account number. To use it as a credit or debit card, provide the card number, expiration date and CVV code. Next, provide your Netspend card's routing and account number to establish it as the recipient bank account. Both MoneyGram and Western Union charge a fee for this service.
